RHYME / ANNUAL REPORTS

Do not let your shareholders slump headfirst into their pudding.

Annual reports are often boring affairs. Numbers. Charts. Corporate-speak that few beyond the boardroom understand – and even those who do are sometimes numb to it.

That’s not to say you need to glam things up like it’s Vanity Fair 1986. But you should at least be clear, conversational, and at the very least able to keep your shareholders awake.

At Rhyme, we bring strategy, writing, creative direction, and design together to turn complex corporate information into a clear and interesting report. A report that answers the questions investors, stakeholders, and the media actually have, without losing the personality of the business behind it.

In short, a report you actually want to read.

A year of ups and downs. One straight story.

An annual report must accommodate a lot: financial performance, strategic priorities, market conditions, business-unit updates, people, governance, sustainability, and the outlook ahead. Each section may have a different owner, different data, and a different way of describing the company. The result can be accurate but fragmented: dozens of individual contributions and no compelling whole.

Our job is to find the thread that connects them. We ask what changed during the year, what those changes mean, and what readers need to understand. We turn those insights into a narrative that gives the report direction while respecting the factual and regulatory requirements that make corporate reporting a serious undertaking.

Good storytelling is not decoration applied after the numbers have been finalized.

There’s a term for that, something about polishing something. At Rhyme, we don’t do that. We start with the narrative and let it undergird and drive the entire report.

Annual report services

Report strategy and creative concept

A strong report needs a strong idea. We explore the company’s priorities, accomplishments, challenges, and ambitions to identify a central narrative and creative direction. That idea informs the structure, visual language, and headline system – not just the cover.

Annual report copywriting and editing

From the chair’s message and management commentary to business reviews and strategic sections, we turn interviews, source documents, presentations, and approved disclosures into writing that is accurate, fluent, and engaging. We also edit existing contributions for clarity, consistency, and tone.

Content architecture and editorial flow

Readers shouldn’t need to assemble a company’s story for themselves. We help organize sections, identify repetition, create stronger transitions, and develop informative headlines that make dense information easier to navigate.

Design and creative direction

Writing and design should work together from the start. We develop the creative approach and shape the interplay of typography, photography, illustration, layouts, and data presentation to make the report more readable and memorable.

Sustainability reporting narratives

Sustainability communications need discipline as well as clarity. We can structure and articulate narratives around approved policies, priorities, metrics, and progress. Technical reporting requirements, assurance, and final compliance judgments remain with the reporting company and its specialist advisers.

A report should answer more than “How did we do?”

Senior leaders and communications teams face several common challenges when preparing a report. Perhaps different departments describe the same strategy in entirely different ways. Perhaps the company has plenty of performance data, but little explanation of what those figures mean for its future. Perhaps the CEO has a compelling vision, but the draft reads like a giant press release with the personality of a Claude chatbot.

Those are communication problems, not simply writing problems. The solution usually involves working backward from the reader: what do they already know, what do they need to understand, and what evidence will give them confidence? A good annual report creates context without becoming promotional, and provides detail without sacrificing direction.

More than words.

An annual report is easier to judge when you can see how its narrative takes shape on the page. Here is a selection from Rhyme’s work for Universal Robina Corporation. Explore more of our selected work.

Our work with Universal Robina

Piattos. Nova. Chippy. Cloud 9. Great Taste Coffee. Universal Robina Corporation is home to some of the Philippines’ most recognizable food and beverage brands. Behind those products is a complex business with performance, innovation, operations, and strategic priorities to communicate.

Rhyme has worked with URC on annual and sustainability reports over several years. As our existing portfolio explains, the work brings together copywriting, creative direction, design, and visual storytelling to communicate business performance and achievements as a coherent narrative.

It’s an example of the kind of challenge we enjoy: taking complicated corporate material seriously while making it genuinely worth reading. See Rhyme’s Universal Robina work.

How we collaborate

1. Understand the business and the brief

We begin with the audience, the reporting requirements, the available material, the decision-makers, and the schedule. We establish what must be communicated and identify any gaps in the source material.

2. Find the narrative

We develop a proposed direction, section architecture, and key messages based on the facts and priorities supplied by the client. The goal is a story that is both distinctive and defensible.

3. Write, shape, and design

Working with the client team and relevant subject-matter experts, we develop content and creative executions through structured review rounds. Clarity and consistency are addressed throughout – not only during final proofreading.

4. Refine and finalize

We incorporate approved corrections and refine the report toward its final form. Clients remain responsible for validating data, regulated disclosures, governance statements, and any required reporting or legal approvals.

Why bring in an outside partner?

Indeed, your team knows the company better than anyone. But an outside reporting partner brings a different kind of value: fresh questions, editorial distance, and the ability to see connections that can be harder to spot when you’re working inside the organization every day.

Our approach to brand strategy and verbal identity rests on the same principle: complex ideas deserve clear, distinctive language. We don’t replace corporate communications, investor relations, finance, or sustainability teams. We work with them to express their expertise more clearly. Whether you need a complete creative partner or specialist writing support, we can shape the engagement around what your internal team already does well.

Frequently asked questions

Can Rhyme handle annual report copywriting without design?

Yes. We can work alongside your existing designers or production partners, supplying narrative strategy, copywriting, editing, headlines, and editorial structure.

Can you work on both annual and sustainability reports?

Yes. Rhyme has experience working on annual and sustainability report communications, including projects for Universal Robina. But an important caveat: we don’t gather the sustainability data, crunch the numbers, and provide analysis. We take the work of your sustainability team and integrate it into the annual report, so it’s consistent with the overall theme and narrative direction.

Do you work with companies outside the Philippines?

Absolutely. We can collaborate remotely with international teams. The first step is to understand the company’s reporting requirements, approvals, working hours, scope, and schedule.

How early should we involve you?

Earlier is usually better – the easier it is to start crafting the report architecture and creative concept. But we can also review an established brief and advise on where writing or editorial support would add value.

What should we send when we inquire?

A short description of your company, the type of report, the services you need, your expected release date, and any available brief or previous report will help us have a useful first discussion.

Let’s make your next report worth reading.

If your next annual report needs more than competent assembly, we’d like to hear about it. Tell us what you mean to say – and we’ll help you say what you mean.
